Author's Purpose and Craft: Understanding Purpose and Message
Term | Definition |

Annotating | adding notes or comments to a text to mark significant features and/or personal commentary |
Author's Purpose | the reason the author writes about a particular topic (e.g. to persuade, to entertain, to inform, to explain, to analyze etc.) |
Audience | the intended target group for a message, regardless of the medium. |
Brainstorming | a technique in which many ideas are generated quickly and without judgement or evaluation, usually as part of a problem-solving process or to inspire creative thinking. May be done in a classroom, with a small group, or individually |
Context | the words, sentences or passages that precede or follow a specific word, sentence, or passage. |
Editing | a stage in the writing process when a written text is prepared for an audience by attending to and correcting mechanics, grammar, and spelling. |
Purpose | the intended goal of a piece of writing; the reason a person writes |
Topic | a specific subject, idea, or issue that is the focus of a discussion, essay, article, or other work. |
