| Assimilation | the cognitive process of fitting new information into existing cognitive schemas, perceptions and understanding. Overall beliefs and understanding of the world do not change as a result of the new information |
| Accommodation | When the new experience is very different from what we have encountered before we need to change our schemas in a very radical way or create a whole new schema |
