rod cell a type of cell in the retina responsible for night vision
vertigo a malfunction of the semicircular canals resulting in balance problems and dizziness
external ear infection (otitis externa) an infection of the ear canal usually caused by bacteria or fungi that thrive in moist environments
retina the membrane containing the photoreceptor cells that detect light and color in the eye
ophthalmic ointment eye ointment
narrow-angle glaucoma an acute eye condition that comes on quickly and is resolved with surgery followed by drugs
semicircular canals canals in the inner ear that are full of fluid and maintain the body’s balance and orientation
pupil the black center of the eye
aqueous humor the fluid in the anterior chamber that lubricates and protects the lens of the eye
earwax dissolver used to loosen and dissolve cerumen in patients with cerumen impaction
lens the part of the eye that focuses light onto the back of the eye, much like the lens of a camera
anterior chamber the container behind the cornea that holds the aqueous humor of the eye
organ of Corti the sensory hairs lining the surface of the cochlea
glaucoma a chronic eye disorder characterized by abnormally high internal eye pressure that damages the optic nerve and causes partial or complete loss of vision
vitamin A a vitamin essential to photoreceptor cell growth and regeneration
drying agent used for treatment or prevention of otitis externa; also known as swimmer’s ear
external ear the part of the ear that captures sound waves
sclera the outer coating of the eyeball; also known as the white of the eye
conjunctivitis inflammation of the mucous membranes surrounding the eye; also known as pink eye
cerumen earwax
ear canal the part of the ear that sound travels through to reach the eardrum; also known as auditory canal
intraocular pressure the buildup of force inside the eye
vitreous humor the fluid inside the eye, behind the lens
beta-carotene a pigment in plants that is converted to vitamin A, an essential vitamin
iris the coloring around the pupil of the eye
macula a spot near the center of the retina containing the focal point where light is concentrated for vision
optic nerve the nerve connecting the eye to the brain
malleus, incus, and stapes the bones of the middle ear that vibrate in response to sound waves
oval window the entrance to the inner ear
tympanic membrane eardrum
middle ear infection (otitis media) condition in which fluid from the middle ear does not drain well, allowing bacteria and viruses to flourish
open-angle glaucoma a slowly progressing chronic eye condition managed with medication alone
cone cells photoreceptor cells in the retina of the eye which are responsible for color vision
middle ear the part of the ear beyond the eardrum
eardrop topical otic preparation
cornea the protective cover for the anterior chamber, iris, and pupil of the eye
cochlea the part of the ear that produces pressure waves
olive oil oil extracted from olives
eustachian tube the part of the ear that connects to the throat to allow fluid to drain
