conjunctiva | the mucous membrane of the socket that holds the eye in place |
presbycusis | hearing loss due to damage to the organ of Corti |
ophthalmic glaucoma agent | topical medication that reduces production of aqueous humor or its drainage from the anterior chamber |
color blindness | a condition in which cone cells do not differentiate certain colors |
rod cell | a type of cell in the retina responsible for night vision |
vertigo | a malfunction of the semicircular canals resulting in balance problems and dizziness |
external ear infection (otitis externa) | an infection of the ear canal usually caused by bacteria or fungi that thrive in moist environments |
retina | the membrane containing the photoreceptor cells that detect light and color in the eye |
ophthalmic ointment | eye ointment |
narrow-angle glaucoma | an acute eye condition that comes on quickly and is resolved with surgery followed by drugs |
semicircular canals | canals in the inner ear that are full of fluid and maintain the body’s balance and orientation |
pupil | the black center of the eye |
aqueous humor | the fluid in the anterior chamber that lubricates and protects the lens of the eye |
earwax dissolver | used to loosen and dissolve cerumen in patients with cerumen impaction |
lens | the part of the eye that focuses light onto the back of the eye, much like the lens of a camera |
anterior chamber | the container behind the cornea that holds the aqueous humor of the eye |
organ of Corti | the sensory hairs lining the surface of the cochlea |
glaucoma | a chronic eye disorder characterized by abnormally high internal eye pressure that damages the optic nerve and causes partial or complete loss of vision |
vitamin A | a vitamin essential to photoreceptor cell growth and regeneration |
drying agent | used for treatment or prevention of otitis externa; also known as swimmer’s ear |
external ear | the part of the ear that captures sound waves |
sclera | the outer coating of the eyeball; also known as the white of the eye |
conjunctivitis | inflammation of the mucous membranes surrounding the eye; also known as pink eye |
cerumen | earwax |
ear canal | the part of the ear that sound travels through to reach the eardrum; also known as auditory canal |
intraocular pressure | the buildup of force inside the eye |
vitreous humor | the fluid inside the eye, behind the lens |
beta-carotene | a pigment in plants that is converted to vitamin A, an essential vitamin |
iris | the coloring around the pupil of the eye |
macula | a spot near the center of the retina containing the focal point where light is concentrated for vision |
optic nerve | the nerve connecting the eye to the brain |
malleus, incus, and stapes | the bones of the middle ear that vibrate in response to sound waves |
oval window | the entrance to the inner ear |
tympanic membrane | eardrum |
middle ear infection (otitis media) | condition in which fluid from the middle ear does not drain well, allowing bacteria and viruses to flourish |
open-angle glaucoma | a slowly progressing chronic eye condition managed with medication alone |
cone cells | photoreceptor cells in the retina of the eye which are responsible for color vision |
middle ear | the part of the ear beyond the eardrum |
eardrop | topical otic preparation |
cornea | the protective cover for the anterior chamber, iris, and pupil of the eye |
cochlea | the part of the ear that produces pressure waves |
olive oil | oil extracted from olives |
eustachian tube | the part of the ear that connects to the throat to allow fluid to drain |
