Antibiotics EX: -cilins, Keflex, Bactrim, Cipro, Levaquin USE: Kill or prevent bacteria SE: GI distress, allergic reaction, superinfection Potential joint damage, with GI distress may limit abdominal activity
Opioid/Analgesics EX: Morphine, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Codeine, Fentanyl, Demerol USE: Blocks pain SideEffect: Nausea, allergic reactions, sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, slowed heart rate, physical dependence, an addiction. Causes orthostatic hypotension with change of position, impaired judgment means lack of balance/coordination
Acetaminophen EX: Tylenol USE: Non-inflammatory pain, Fever and Analgesic SideEffect: Skin reactions (rash, hives, itching) Liver damage Can cause drowsiness, inability to focus or stay balanced
NSAIDS EX: Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Ketoprofen prevent blood clotting SideEffect: Difficulty breathing, blood in urine, change in consciousness. Hypertension (with older pop), CHF, Mixing with alcohol(liver is affected by Tylenol/NSAIDS)
Cox-2 Inhibitors EX: Celebrex USE: Similar to NSAIDS except less risk of bleeding SideEffect: Bloating, Diarrhea, Constipation, Nausea or vomiting. Stomach pain, upset stomach. Heartburn. Increased fluid retention can result in hypertension. Check for CHF and mixing with alcohol.
Corticosterioids (AKA glucocorticoids) EX: Cortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisone USE: Treat rashes, Inflammatory bowel disease, asthma. SideEffect: Fluid buildup/ swelling in lower legs, osteoporosis, increase blood glucose, muscle myopathy Bone fractures(more seen in older pop) , Muscle weakness and increased fatigue
Muscle Relaxers EX: Baclofen, Soma, Flexeril, Lorzone, Amrix USE: decrease muscle spasm and tone SideEffect: drowsiness and allergic reaction Fall risk/Balance/coordination due to drowsiness
