Chapter 8: Emotion

behavioral component behaviors associated with the motion; include body movements, vocalizations, threat postures, etc
autonomic component activation of the sympathetic branch of the ANS with inverse deactivation of parasympathetic branch; vasodilation, sweating, energy expenditure, etc
hormonal component generally governed by the HPA axis (Hypothalamus-Pituatary-Adrenal); release of Corticotrophins from brain; Release of adrenaline (epinephrine) from adrenal medulla
negative emotions most evolutionary conserved (fear responses, aggression); subserved by the amygdala
positive emotions some evolutionary conservation (associated with sex, child rearing, reward-related behaviors)
amygdala involved in classical conditioning of fear. Involved with primarily negative emotions and with sexual behavior, aggression, and learning, especially in emotional situations
lateral amygdala input region from hippocampus and thalamus → projects to other amygdala structures and dopaminergic ventral midbrain (Dorsal/Ventral striatum)
basal amygdala input region for LA → projects to areas of the pFC (information processing) and central nucleus
central amygdala projects to hypothalamus, hindbrain areas, major amygdala output area
fear conditioning type of associative learning task in which mice learn to associate a particular neutral conditioned stimulus
extinction referred to as a dissociation between the conditioned stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus
vmPFC ventromedial prefrontal cortex; involved in “cognitive control”
