erysipelas a skin infection characterized by redness and warmth, local pain, swollen plaques with sharply established borders, chills, malaise, and fever; a form of cellulitis
wrinkle a line or crease in the skin
cradle cap colloquial term for seborrheic dermatitis
impetigo a superficial, highly contagious skin infection; characterized by small red spots that evolve into vesicles, break, and become encrusted and surrounded by a zone of erythema
pruritic itchy
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression a condition that causes appetite changes, weight gain, fat redistribution, fluid retention, and insomnia (can be caused by absorption of topical corticosteroids)
acne vulgaris formation of comedones, papules, pimples, and/or cysts in the skin of the face and upper trunk; these lesions occur when hair follicles and sebaceous glands are blocked and become inflamed
actinic keratosis a precancerous skin condition resulting from overexposure to sunlight
sweat gland a type of gland in the skin that produces water and salts; also known as an eccrine sweat gland
psoriasis a skin disorder characterized by welldefined patches of raised, silvery or white, flaky, and pruritic skin; can affect any part of the body
nodular acne ormation of comedones, papules, pimples, and/or cysts in the skin of the face and upper trunk; these lesions occur when hair follicles and

squamous cell carcinoma a skin cancer that grows more rapidly than basal cell carcinoma but in which metastasis is uncommon

photosensitivity an abnormal response of the skin or eye to sunlight
lice wingless insects that live parasitically on various animals, including most mammals
sebaceous gland secretes sebum, a substance that oils the skin and hair
diaper rash common in infants, when skin remains wet for long periods and bacteria growing on the skin turns into a rash
retinoid compound related to vitamin A that helps increase cell turnover in follicles
Staphylococcus aureus a bacteria that causes infections on the skin and requires antibiotics to treat
folliculitis a hair follicle inflammation presenting as a minute, red, pustulated nodule without involvement of the surrounding tissue
emulsify enable mixing with water
pimples a pore or follicle clogged with oil, dirt, or dead skin cells; can either be an open clogged pore, known as a blackhead, or a closed clogged pore, known as a whitehead
vitamin D analog a treatment for psoriasis
calcineurin inhibitors used to treat severe eczema
carbuncle a coalescent mass of infected hair follicles that is deeper than a furuncle
seborrheic dermatitis greasy, scaly area on the skin that sometimes appears red, brown, or yellow; also known as cradle cap
dermis layer of skin below the epidermis
methemoglobinemia a disorder in which an abnormal form of hemoglobin is produced
atopic dermatitis a chronic itchy eruption of unknown origin, although allergic, hereditary, and psychogenic factors may be involved; also known as eczema
ringworm a fungus that infects the horny (scaly) layer of skin or the nails; also known as tinea
rosacea chronic dermatologic disorder involving inflammation of the skin of the face; also known as acne rosacea
keratolytic an agent that breaks down and peels off dead skin cells to keep them from clogging pores
sun protection factor a measurement of the effectiveness of a sunscreen
adipose tissue the layer of skin consisting of fat cells
dandruff a malfunction of the oil-producing glands around hair follicles on the scalp
pediculosis an infestation of lice
sebum an oil, produced by sebaceous glands around hair follicles, that when overproduced creates acne
integumentary system describes the system of tissue that protects and covers the body, includ­ing skin, nails, and hair
contact dermatitis an inflammatory reaction produced by contact with an irritating agent
malignant melanoma a highly malignant skin cancer formed from pigment-producing skin cells
eczema a dry, flaky, red, itchy skin inflammation; also known as atopic dermatitis
suppuration a type of gland in the skin that produce water and salts; also known as eccrine sweat gland
furuncle a staphylococcal infection of a sebaceous gland and the associated hair follicle; also known as a boil
acne an inflammation of the skin, usually on the face and neck, that is caused by increased activity of the sebaceous glands at puberty
epidermis the top layer of the skin
subcutaneous tissue the innermost layer of skin connecting the dermis to underlying organs and tissues
topical corticosteroids anti-inflammatory agents that treat contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and allergic reactions
basal cell carcinoma a slow-growing skin cancer that rarely metastasizes
