| absolute zero | temperature at which mlecular energy is at a minimum |
| heat | enery transferred between objects that are at different temperatures |
| thermal energy | kinetic energy of a substance's atoms |
| thermal conductor | material through which engergy can be transferred as heat |
| athermal insulator | material that reduces or prevents the transfer of heat |
| convection | transfer of thermal engery by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas |
| radiation | transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves |
| specific heat | quantity of heat required to raise a unit mass 1 K or 1 C in a specified way given constant pressure and volume |
| states of matter | physical forms of matter, which include solid, liquid and gas |
| change of state | change of substance from one phyiscal state to another |
| insulation | substance that reduces transfer of electricity, heat, or sound |
| heat engine | machine that transforms heat into mechanical energy or work |
| thermal pollution | temperature increase in a body water that is caused by human activity and that has a harmful effect on water quality and on the ability of that body of water to support life |
