| electroencephalography | The brain waves vary in frequency - number of waves per second, intensity and amplitude (peaks and troughs) Different patterns of brain waves can indicate problems with the brain such as epilepsy and tumors | This technique uses electrical stimulation to activate parts of the brain and the patient can report on the effect of that In an EEG we investigate the whole brain rather than its parts It measures brain waves or electrical activity in the brain | |
| computerised tomography | A cat scan is a type of xray that involves sending a series of narrow beams through the head It is very clear It can detect strokes, tumors, alzheimers disease and other injuries | It scan through 180 degrees and takes a measurement very one degree Information is then sent to a computer and a cross-sectional picture of the brain is produced | |
| magnetic resonance imaging | An mri uses a strong magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and computers to produce an image of the brain With the help of a computer it creates a 3-d picture of the rain or body It can detect tumors and other abnormalities | The patient is placed in a tunnel surrounded by a large magnet that produces a powerful magnetic field When part of the body is exposed to the magnetic field and exposed to a certain radiofrequency pulse the body tissue emits a signal that can be measured | |
| Functional magnetic resonance imaging | An fMRI is used to measure activity in the brain when the neurons are consuming oxygen - it measures brain function When a part of the brain is active it contains more oxygen-rich blood levels which can be measured through magnetic resonance | Higher levels of oxygen = higher levels of oxyhaemoglobin which indicates higher activity Haemoglobin and oxyhaemoglobin contain iron in different forms that affect the MRI signal differently | This is known as a BOLD signal - blood oxygenation level dependant signal fMRI is useful for measuing visual processing, reafing and other cognitive abilities |
