Section 1: Pharmacodynamics
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is pharmacodynamics? | A subset of pharmacology that deals with how medications cause their effects on the body |
| Three concepts addressed in pharmacodynamics | The medication's mechanism of action (agonist or antagonist) Therapeutic window Therapeutic index |
| Example of an agonist | Albuterol stimulates bronchiole dilation to help patients with asthma breathe better. |
| Example of an antagonist | Metoprolol inhibits the stimulation of the heart to decrease cardiac output |
| What is an agonist? | A medication that stimulates the effects of an existing process |
| What does a wide therapeutic window indicate? | A medication with a greater range of doses that will work for patieints. |
| How is the therapeutic index (TI) value determined? | By taking the toxic dose of a given medication and dividing by the effective dose. |
| What does a high therapeutic index (TI) value indicate? | Medications with a higher TI are safer. |
| Examples of medication with a high therapeutic index | ibuprofen |
| Example of medication with a low therapeutic index | Phenytoin |
