Chapter 9
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Strong manipulation | maximizes difference between conditions. Statistically significant effect of IV on DV |
behavioral measures | direct observations of behaviors, academic participation (How many times a student raises their hand in class) |
self-reported measures | attitudes, emotional states, intended behaviors, liking. Rating scales with descriptive anchors are common. (I feel I could properly give myself a breast self-examination SD (strongly disagree) __ __ __ __ __ SA (strongly agree)) |
physiological measures | recordings of physiological responses of the body (EEG, GSR, EMG, MRI, others). Least bias collection to collect accurate data |
demand characteristics | any feature of the exp. that might inform the RPs of the purpose of the study. RPs form expectations about hypothesis and try to confirm it. Use deception, filler items in questionnaire |
ceiling effect | failure of a measure to detect a difference because it was too easy. IV appears to have no effect on DV; everyone performs well |
floor effect | failure of a measure to detect a difference because it was too difficult. Nobody performs well |
manipulation check | did the IV have the intended effect? not effective - save expense of running experiment. Non-significance - due to problem with manipulation |
