transgender having a gender identity that differs from the sex a person was assigned at birth, which is typically limited to male or female
human chorionic gonadotropin a glycoprotein produced by trophoblastic cells and their descendants in the placenta
oxytocic agent a drug that promotes contraction of uterine smooth muscle at term of pregnancy
emergency contraceptive a drug taken within 120 hours of having sex that stops the release of an egg from the ovary to prevent fertilization by sperm; if the patient is already pregnant, the drug has no effect
vaginal ring a combination contraceptive that is inserted into the vagina; contains synthetic estrogen and progesterone
vasomotor affecting constriction and dilation of blood vessels
growth hormone deficiency a condition in which the pituitary gland doesn’t produce enough growth hormone, which leads to stunted height, stunted muscle development, or both
sexual dysfunction persistent, recurrent problems with sexual response, including decreased desire, reduced arousal, inability to achieve orgasm, and pain during sexual intercourse
oral contraceptive one or more hormonal compounds taken orally to prevent the occurrence of pregnancy
growth hormone a fundamental hormone that affects metabolism, skeletal growth, and somatic growth; a deficiency in this hormone causes growth retardation
perimenopause a period of time prior to menopause, characterized by a gradual loss of ovarian function and irregular bleeding
gender transition a process that is social, physical, or both that seeks to align a person’s gender identity with their outward appearance; it may include hormone therapy and other medical interventions
tocolytic agent a drug that slows labor in pregnancy; used to treat premature labor
androgen any of a group of hormones that promote the development and maintenance of typically masculine physical characteristics
virilization the development of typically masculine secondary sex characteristics
phytoestrogen a plant source of protein and fiber used in complementary and alternative medicine for conditions including hot flashes; also known as isoflavone and soy
spermicide an agent that kills sperm cells on contact
hormone therapy treatment to relieve symptoms of a deficiency in sex hormones, to augment sexual characteristics, or to support gender identity and transition; also known as hormone replacement therapy
hypogonadism a condition in which the body’s sex glands produce few or no hormones
feminizing hormone therapy a reduction of androgen activity and use of hormone therapy to induce the development of typically secondary sex characteristics in a person who was assigned male at birth
gynecomastia excessive development of mammary glands, with or without tenderness
contraception any practice that serves to prevent pregnancy during sexual activity
dyspareunia painful intercourse
endometrium the inner membrane of the uterus
diaphragm a contraceptive device inserted inside the vagina to prevent sperm from entering the uterus
internal condom a condom inserted into the vagina before sexual activity to form a physical barrier between the penis and vagina (previously known as a female condom)
external condom a condom placed over the erect penis before sexual activity to form a physical barrier (previously known as a male condom)
phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor any of the class of drugs most frequently used to treat erectile dysfunction
hirsutism abnormal hairiness
estrogen any of the group of hormones produced primarily in the ovaries that regulate the reproductive system and produce typically feminine secondary sex characteristics
