Clinical Psychology

Panic Disorder an anxiety disorder that includes frequent and unexpected panic attacks, or sudden periods of intense fear and discomfort
Obsessions unwanted, intrusive thoughts that are distressing
Compulsions an act or behavior to rid of distressful thoughts or feelings
General Anxiety Disorder persistent feeling of anxiety or dread that interferes with your life
Social Anxiety Disorder an intense, persistent fear of being watched and judged by others
Phobia an anxiety disorder that consists of an uncontrollable, irrational, and lasting fear of a certain object, situation, or activity that can be so overwhelming that a person may go to great lengths to avoid the source of this fear
Mania a period of prolonged restlessness, impulsivity, distraction, or fast talking/jumping from one idea to the next
Bipolar 1 the classic diagnosis in which patients experience periods of mania followed by depression in a cyclic pattern
Bipolar 2 a milder form that includes longer periods of depression and at least one episode of hypomania.
Schizophrenia creates a split from reality; typically known for the auditory hallucinations it produces, but can also include a variety of positive or negative symptoms
Positive Symptoms (Schizophrenia) the presence of problematic behavior; hallucination, delusions, disorganized thoughts, and bizarre behaviors
Negative Symptoms the absence of healthy behavior; flat effect, reduce socialization, anhedonia (no enjoyment), and avolition (restricted movement or focus)
Delusions of Grandeur belief that one is famous, an important figure, or has unusual powers
Delusions of Persecution belief that others are out to get them
Delusions of Sin/Guilt belief that they've committed a terrible sin
Delusions of Influence belief that their thoughts are under external control (government, aliens, ect.)
Paranoid Schizophrenic plagued by hallucinations and delusions, both grandiose and persecutory
Catatonic Schizophrenic rarely initiating or controlling movements; copies others speech and actions
Disorganized Schizophrenic primary symptoms are the flat effect, incoherent speech, and random behavior
Undifferentiated Schizophrenic many varied symptoms
Residual Schizophrenic withdrawal continues after positive symptoms disappear
Dissociative Identity Disorder split personality disorder that usually results from trauma
Somatic Symptom Disorder a psychological disorder in which the anxiety takes a somatic or bodily form without apparent cause; symptoms are REAL
Conversion Disorder a disorder in which a person experiences a specific physical symptom that is not compatible with a known condition; could include paralysis, blindness, or inability to swallow
Illness Anxiety Disorder/Hypochondriasis a disorder in which a person interprets normal physical sensation as a symptom of a deadly disease
Dissociative Amnesia loss of memory with no known cause
Dissociative Fugue a "run away" state; wandering away from one's life or identity with no memory of such
Intellectual Disability intellectual and adaptive functioning deficits
Autism Spectrum Disorder significant problems with social communication and interaction; small number of interests
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder significant and consistent pattern of inattention and impulsive behavior
Schizotypal Personality Disorder social deficits, oddities in thinking, perception, or communication that resemble schizophrenia
Paranoid Personality Disorder unwarranted mistrust of people, prone to jealousy
Histrionic Personality Disorder overly dramatic, exaggerated emotions, and egocentric tendencies
Narcissistic Personality Disorder overly self-important, preoccupied with success, expect special treatment, and lack interpersonal empathy
Borderline Personality Disorder unstable self-image, mood swings, poor relationships, and impulsive/unpredictable
Antisocial Personality Disorder fail to accept social norms, violate others rights, difficulty keeping a job, and reckless
Avoidant Personality Disorder sensitive to rejection or humiliation and socially withdrawn
Dependent Personality Disorder lack of self-esteem, passively allowing others to make their decisions
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder preoccupied with organization, rules, and schedules, conventional or serious
Dopamine Hypothesis those with schizophrenia has an increase in dopamine; some think that is in the origin of the disorder
The Flat Effect a condition that causes people to not express emotions, common side effect of antipsychotic medications
