Matter

TermDefinition
Protons A subatomic particle of the nucleus of an atom that is without charge and contributes to the mass of an atom
Neutrons A positively charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom and contributes to the mass of the atom
Electrons A negatively charged subatomic particle of the electron cloud; involved in the formation of chemical bonds
Heterogeneous mixtures A mixture where throughout the solution the composition is not uniform
Homogeneous mixtures Uniformly mixed and have the same properties throughout
Element A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
Compound A chemical substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically bound together in a fixed ratio
Thermal energy Energy radiated by hot objects such as the Sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation
Atoms The smallest unit of an element that has all of the properties of that element containing a nucleus within an electron cloud
Combustion When an organic substance combines with oxygen and releases large amounts of heat and light energy
