Term | Definition |

Protons | A subatomic particle of the nucleus of an atom that is without charge and contributes to the mass of an atom |
Neutrons | A positively charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of an atom and contributes to the mass of the atom |
Electrons | A negatively charged subatomic particle of the electron cloud; involved in the formation of chemical bonds |
Heterogeneous mixtures | A mixture where throughout the solution the composition is not uniform |
Homogeneous mixtures | Uniformly mixed and have the same properties throughout |
Element | A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means |
Compound | A chemical substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically bound together in a fixed ratio |
Thermal energy | Energy radiated by hot objects such as the Sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation |
Atoms | The smallest unit of an element that has all of the properties of that element containing a nucleus within an electron cloud |
Combustion | When an organic substance combines with oxygen and releases large amounts of heat and light energy |
