ELA Fiction Vocabulary

TermDefinition
theme the lesson of the story; a lesson for your heart and life
figurative language the opposite of literal language; it means something other than it says
alliteration when the same beginning sound is repeated. Example: Peter picked a pint of peppers.
similes compares two unlike things using the word like or as. Example: I was as hungry as a bear.
idioms A group of words that has a different meaning from what you read; an expression. Example: It's raining cats and dogs.
Metaphors compares two unlike things but does not use the words like or as. Example: They are two peas in a pod.
Personification when an animal, object, or idea acts like a person. Example: The vacuum gobbled up the crumbs.
hyperbole exaggeration. Example: I've told you a million times to clean up your room.
character development how a character changes. often a clue for theme
plot the most important parts of the story; includes beginning with characters and problem, middle with how the characters try to solve the problem but fail, and end which includes the solution; often a clue for theme
character's perspective how a character thinks or feels; use character's thoughts, words, actions, and feelings to determine
