QuestionAnswer
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass the amount of matter (or stuff) in an object
states of matter solid, liquid, gas, plasma, Bose-Einstein Condensate
solid A state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume
liquid A state of matter that has no definite shape but has a definite volume.
gas A state of matter with no definite shape or volume
Bose-Einstein Condensates a state of mater when a group of atoms cooled very close of absolute zero
Plasmas a state of matter formed at extremely high temperatures when electrons are stripped from neutral atoms. Stars are predominantly composed of these.
Dissolves to pass into a solution with a liquid
Evaporates changes from a liquid to a gas
Properties of matter color, shape, texture, odor, taste, mass weight, volume, density and magnetism
Color observable Characteristics
Shape Form
Texture The feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface, substance, or fabric.
Oder intensity of smell
Magnetism The force of attraction or repulsion of magnetic materials
Hardness A measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched
Reflectivity The characteristic of being capable of or producing reflection
Solubility A measure of how much solute can dissolve in a given solvent at a given temperature.
Electrical conductivity is a measure of how well electricity can move through a material
Electrical Conductors Allow electricity to flow easily
Electrical Insulators A material that slows or stops electricity
Thermal conductivity The ability of an object to transfer heat
Thermal energy The energy of moving particles
Thermal Insulators objects that don't conduct thermal energy
Heating increases the energy of the particles; they move faster and move farther apart
Melting point The temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid.
Boiling Point the temperature where a liquid becomes a gas
Physical changes Any change that DOES NOT alter the chemical composition of a substance.
Conservation of Matter matter can neither be created nor destroyed in physical and chemical changes
Condensation Is the change from a gas to a liquid
Mixture A combination of materials. It is a physical property in which the individual molecules enjoy being near each other, but their fundamental chemical structure does not change.
Chemical Changes a change in which one or more substances combine or break apart to form new substances
Chemical reaction Process that changes, or transforms, one set of chemicals into another set of chemicals
How do you know whether a chemical change has occurred? A chemical change has occurred if an entirely new substance has been created. For example, breaking a glow stick makes a chemical reaction happen and it lights up.
Signs of a chemical reaction change in temperature, formation of bubbles, precipitate (solid) forms, color change, change in smell, difficult to reverse
Does the conservation of matter apply to chemical changes? Yes, because the total mass of matter is the same as the total mass after the reaction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
