Med. Indications

Pharmacology 2 test

Acarbose Management of type 2 diabetes in conjunction with dietary therapy ; may be used w insulin or other hypoglycemic agents.
Atorvastatin Adjunctive management of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. Primary prevention of coronary heart disease in asymptomatic patients with increased total and LDL cholesterol, and decreased HDL cholesterol.
Captopril Alone or w other agents in management of HTN. Management of HF. Reduction of risk of death, HF related hospitalizations, and development of overt HF following MI. Tx of diabetic neuropathy in pts w type 1 diabetes mellitus and retinopathy.
Carbamapazine Treatment of tonic-clonic, mixed, and complex-partial seizures. Management of pain in trigeminal neuralgia. Equetro only: Acute manic or mixed episodes associated w Bipolar 1 disorder. Other forms of neurogenic pain.
Carvedilol HTN. HF (ischemic of cardiomyopathic) with digoxin, diuretics, and ACE inhibitors. L ventricular dysfunction after Myocardial Infarction (MI).
Donepezil Mild, moderate, or severe dementia/neurocognitive disorder associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Escitalopram Major depressive disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder. Panic Disorder, OCD, PTSD, Social anxiety disorder, Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Finasteride Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); can be used with doxazosin. Adrongenetic alopecia (Male pattern baldness) in men only.
Fluticasone Maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy
Gabapentin Partial seizures (adjunct tx, immediate release only). Postherpetic neuralgia. Restless legs syndrome (Horizant only) Neuropathic pain, prevention of migraine, bipolar disorder, anxiety, diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Glyburide PO control of blood sugar in type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet therapy fails. Requires some pancreatic function.
Heparin Prophylaxis and tx of various thromboembolic disorders including: VTE, PE, A fib w embolization, Acute and Chronic consumptive coagulopathies, peripheral arterial thromboembolism. Used in very low doses (10-100 units) to maintain patency of IV catheter
Insulin Lispro Control of hyperglycemia in patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus
Insulin Glargine Control of hyperglycemia in patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus
Insulin Humulin N Control of hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus
Insulin Regular Control of hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus. Concentrated regular insulin U-500: Only for use in patients with insulin requirements >200 u/day. Treatment of hyperkalemia.
Levothyroxine Thyroid supplementation in hypothyroidism. Treatment of suppression of euthyroid goiters. Adjuctive treatment for thyrotropin-dependent thyroid cancer.
Magnesium Hydroxide / Aluminum Hydroxide Neutralize gastric acid following dissolution in gastric contents. Inactivate pepsin if pH is raised to > or equal to 4. Neutralization of gastric acid with healing of ulcers and decrease in associated pain.
Memantine Moderate to severe dementia/neurocognitive disorder associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Mesalamine Delzicol, Lialda, and Pentasa: Tx & Maint. of remission of mild-mod. ulcerative colitis (UC). Apriso: Maint. of remission of UC. Asacol HD: Tx of mod-active UC. Canasa: Tx of active UC. Rowasa: Tx of active mild-mod distal UC, proctosigmoiditis, proctitis
Metformin Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus; may be used with diet, insulin, or sulfonylurea oral hypoglyemics.
Metoclopramide PO: GastroE reflux. PO IV Intranasal: Acute and recurrent diabetic gastroparesis. IV: Prevent N/V associated emetogenic chemotherapy, Prevent post-op N/V when nasogastric suction undesirable, Facilitation of small bowel intubation in radiography. Hiccups
Metoprolol HTN, Angina pectoris, Prevent MI and decrease MI mortality, Management of stable HF due to ischemic, HTN or cardiomyopathic origin. Ventricular arrhythmias, tachycardia, migraine prophylaxis, tremors, anxiety, aggression, drug-induced akathisia
Midazolam Procedural sedation/anxiolysis in pediatric. Preoperative sedation/amnesia - Status epilepticus. Conscious sedation. Aids in anesthesia. Continuous sedation of vented pt. Int.nasal: Acute tx intermittent stereotypic frequent seizure distinct from epilepsy
Omeprazole GERD, healing erosive esophagitis. Duodenal ulcers. Short tx of active benign gastric ulcer. Pathologic hypersecretory conditions - ZollingerEllison syndrome. Reduce risk GI bleeding in ill pts. Heartburn >2x/week
Ondansetron Prevention of N/V associated with highly or moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. Prevention of post-op N/V. Prevention of N/V associated w radiation therapy.
Pantoprazole Erosive esophagitis associated with GERD. Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis. Pathologic gastric hypersecretory conditions. Adjunctive tx of duodenal ulcers associated with H. Pylori.
Phenobarbital Anticonvulsant in tonic-clonic, partial, and febrile seizures in children. Preoperative sedative and in other situations for sedation. Hypnotic (Short term). Prevention/Tx of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates.
Phenytoin Tx/Prevention of tonic-clonic seizures and complex partial seizures. As antiarrhythmic, partially ventricular arrhythmias associated w digoxin toxicity. Management of neuropathic pain, & trigeminal neuralgia.
Pioglitazone Type 2 diabetes mellitus (w diet and exercise); may be used with metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin. Requires insulin for activity. Decreased insulin resistance, resulting in glycemic control w/o hypoglycemia
Polyethylene Glycol Treatment of occasional constipation
Potassium Chloride Treatment/prevention of potassium depletion.
Promethazine Treatment of various allergic conditions/motion sickness. Preoperative sedation. Treatment and prevention of N/V. Adjunct to anesthesia and analgesia.
Rosuvastatin Adjunctive management of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemias. Adjunctive of hypertriglyceridemia. Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Slow progress of atherosclerosis as adjunct to diet. Reduction in LDL, Cardiovascular disease
Spironolactone NY Heart association class III-IV HF. HTN. Edema associated w cirrhosis and nephrotic syndrome. Primary hyperaldosteronism (tablets only). Acne, hormone therapy for transgender females (M to F).
Sucralfate Short term management of duodenal ulcers. Maintenance/preventative of duodenal ulcers. Management of gastric ulcer or GERD. Prevention of gastric mucosal injury caused by high-dose aspirin or other NSAIDs in pt w RA or w H.stress. Mucositis/stomatisis/
Sulfasalazine Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis or as adjunctive therapy in severe ulcerative colitis. Rheumatoid arthritis unresponsive or intolerant to salicylates and/or NSAIDs
Tamsulosin Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Tiotropium Long-term maintenance treatment of bronchospasm due to COPD. Reduce exacerbations in patients with COPD. Long-term maintenance treatment of asthma.
Verapamil Management of HTN, angina pectoris, and/or vasospastic angina (prinzmetal's). Management of SVT arrhythmias and rapid ventricular rates in atrial flutter or fibrillation. Prevention of migraine headache.
