Gender - key terms

TermDefinition
Masculinity Psychological characteristics of a male
Femininity Psychological characteristics of a female
Typical gender Gender that reflects a person's sex
Atypical gender Gender that does NOT reflect a person's sex
Binary A forced choice to one or another position e.g. feminine or masculine
Gender fluid Taking the view that gender is not fixed throughout life but can change
Non-binary View that there are multiple possible outcomes rather than fixed two
Gender dysphoria A condition where a person feels that their biological sex does not match to their gender. This often pursues treatment to reassign gender with sex (surgery)
Transgender Moving from one gender to another
Androgyny Gender that has characteristics associated with being both masculine and feminine.
Sex Your biological structure that decides whether you have male or female reproductive organs and hormones
Gender A social construct of whether you are male or female
