Analgesics and Antagonists

| Acute pain | pain that is of short duration and lasts less than 3 to 6 months and can be from mild to severe |
| Agonist-antagonist | a narcotic analgesic that has properties of both agonist and antagonist |
| analgesic | a drug that alleviates pain |
| antipyretic | a drug that reduces elevated body temperature |
| Chronic pain | pain that lasts longer than 6 months and ranges in intensity from mild to severe |
| epidural | drug administration is performed when a catheter is placed into at the epidural space outside of the dura mater of the brain and spinal cord |
| miosis | pinpoint pupils |
| opioids | narcotic analgesics obtained from the opium plant |
| pain | an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage |
| partial agonist | a category of narcotic analgesic that binds to a receptor, but the response is limited (i.e. is not as great as with the agonist) |
| patient-controlled analgesia | method of pain relief that allows patients to administer their own analgesic by means of an intravenous pump system |
| Reye syndrome | A rare, life threatening condition that occurs in children and is characterized by vomiting and lethargy, progressing to coma |
| Salicylates | drugs that have analgesic, antipyretic and anti inflammatory effects |
| salicylic | A condition produced by salicylate toxicity |
| tinnitus | ringing sound in the ears |
