bonefolder | a dull-edged tool made from bone, used to fold, crease, and score |
text block | a group of sections sewn together, without a cover (case) |
oral tradition | the practice of sharing information orally, rather than writing it down |
scroll | A roll, as of parchment or papyrus, used especially for writing |
codex gigas | the largest extant medieval illuminated manuscript in the world, at 36 inches tall (also called the Devil’s Bible) |
nipping press | used to apply quick and uniform pressure |
awl | used to punch sewing holes in books |
book of hours | a Christian devotional book used to pray |
mixtec codices | pictorial manuscripts with each being painted on tanned deerskin in the Oaxaca region of Mesoamerica |
stab stich binding | a binding originating in China which is also called thread binding |
grain | the direction of fibers in a sheet of paper, determining how it folds and warps |
case binding | using a hard board cover as a case which wraps around the block of pages (Also known as text block) to protect the book |
zine | typically DIY small circulation works which have historically been associated with grassroots movements and activism |
coptic binding | the binding of the first “true” codices; sewn board binding |
parchment | writing material made from specially prepared untanned skins of animals |
book cloth | prepared cloth that has been backed so adhesive will not leak through |
foredge | the edge of the book opposite the spine, where pages are visible |
end sheet | the papers, often decorative, at the beginning and end of a book |
folio | a sheet of paper folded in half, put together to form sections |
section | multiple folios put together |
