Bacterial infection of the Salivary Gland Sialadenitis
Mumps, flu, and others which can cause swelling of the Parotid Glands Viral Infections
Occur most commonly in the Parotids Gland, Pleomorphic Adenomas are the most common comprising 85% of all salivary gland neoplasms Benign Tumors
Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma, Adenocystic Carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma, more than half the tumors found in the Submandibular and Sublingual Glands - fine needle aspiration or Core Biopsy often used to determine malignancy. Malignant Tumors
Modalities of choice when examining the Salivary Glands CT & MR
A small endoscope is placed through the associated duct, stone removal may be performed if present Sialoendoscopy
Radiographic and fluoroscopic examination of the Salivary Glands and Ducts with the use of contrast media Sialography
When is a Sialography useful? When a definitive diagnosis is needed
Clinical Indications for performing a Sialogram: 1 2 3 4 5 1. Localization of a diverticula, stricture and/or stones within salivary duct 2. Demonstrate a Salivary Duct Fistula 3. Possible inflammatory lesion or tumor 4. Benign Salivary Gland Obstruction 5. When a definitive diagnosis is needed from CT & MR
Contrast used for a Sialography exam? Water-Soluble Iodinated Contrast Media (injected into duct in question)
Why are lemons used for a Sialography exam? Squirted into patients mouth causing the Salivary Duct to secrete saliva and visualize the salivary duct in question
SCOUT images performed for a Sialography include: 1 2 3 4 1. Tangential Projections 2. AP Mandible 3. Lateral Mandible 4. Axiolateral Oblique Mandible
AP Projection of the Mandible (Sialogram SCOUT image) Best demonstrate? Parotid Gland and Stenson's Duct
Lateral Projection of the Mandible (Sialogram SCOUT image) Best demonstrate? Parotid Gland and Stenson's Duct
Axiolateral Oblique Projection of the Mandible (Sialogram SCOUT image) Best demonstrate? Submandibular Gland and Wharton's Duct
