Med. Indications

Pharmacology 1 test

Acetylcysteine PO IV - Antidote for the management of potentially hepatotoxic overdose of acetaminophen. Inhaln - Mucolytic in the management of conditions associated with thick viscid mucous secretions. PO Prevention of radiocontrast-induced renal dysfunction
Alendronate Tx and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, osteoporosis in men, Paget's disease of the bone, and corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis who are receiving more than 7.5 mg of prednisone / day w evidence of decreased bone mineral density.
Allopurinol PO - Prevention of attack of gouty arthritis and nephropathy. PO - IV Treatment of secondary hyperuricemia, which may occur during treatment of tumors or leukemias.
Alprazolam Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Panic disorder. Anxiety associated with depression.
Amlodipine Hypertension, Chronic stable angina, Vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's), and recently documented coronary artery disease by angiography and without HF or an ejection fraction less than 40%.
Amipicillin / Sulbactam Treatment of the following infections: Skin and skin structure infections, soft-tissue, otitis media, intra-abdominal, sinusitis, respiratory, genitourinary, meningitis, and septicemia.
Aspirin / Ecotrin Inflammatory disorders including: Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Mild to moderate pain, fever, prophylaxis of transient ischemic attacks and MI. Unlabeled use: Adjunctive tx of Kawasaki disease.
Atenolol Management of hypertension, angina pectoris, and prevention of MI.
Bupropion Tx of depression w psychotherapy, depression w SAD, Smoking cessation. Unlabeled use: Tx of ADHD (adults), and to increase sexual desire in women.
Cefazolin Perioperative prophylaxis and treatment of following infections: Skin and skin structure (including burn wounds), pneumonia, UTI, Biliary tract, Genital, bone and joint, septicemia, and bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis for dental and UR procedures.
Celecoxib Osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis. Ankylosing spondylitis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Acute pain. Primary dysmenorrhea.
Clopidogrel Acute coronary syndrome (ST-segment elevation MI, non-ST-segment elevation MI, or unstable angina). Patients with established peripheral arterial disease, recent MI, or recent stroke.
Codeine Sulfate Management of mild to moderate pain. Antitussive (in smaller doses).
Colchicine Prophylaxis and treatment of acute attacks of gouty arthritis (oral solution is only for prophylaxis). Familial Mediterranean fever.
Dexamethasone Systemic/Local tx of chronic diseases including: Inflammatory, allergic, hematologic, endocrine, neoplastic, dermatologic, autoimmune, management of cerebral edema, and diagnostic in adrenal disorders. Adjunct for N/V from chemo. Tx of airway edema postV.
Diazepam Anxiety disorders, preop and conscious sedation, status epilepticus, skeletal muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal, and Acute tx of intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity that are distinct from a patient's usual seizure pattern
Diphenoxylate / Atropine Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of diarrhea
Docusate Sodium PO - Prevention of constipation (in patients who should avoid straining, such as after MI or rectal surgery). Rect - Used as enema to soften fecal impaction.
Epoetin anemia associated w Chronic kidney disease, anemia secondary to zidovudine (AZT) therapy in HIV-infected pts, Anemia from chemotherapy, reduction of need for allogeneic RBC transfusions in pts undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery.
Famotidine GERD, Short term for active duodenal and benign gastric ulcers, maintenance of duodenal ulcers after healing active ulcers, heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. Stress ulcer prophylaxis. Mgmt of gastric hypersecretory states (Zollinger-Ellison)
Fexofenadine Relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Management of chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Filgrastim Prevention of afebrile neutropenia, management of chronic neutropenia, reduction in time of neutrophil recovery, survival improvement in pts acutely exposed to myelosuppresive doses of radiation, neonatal/HIV neutropenia, Mobilization of hematopoietic pro
Ferrous Sulfate Treatment & prevention iron deficiency anemia.
Hydrocodone / APAP ER: Mgmt of pain severe enough to warrant daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment where alternative treatment options are inadequate. Combination products: Mgmt of moderate to severe pain. Antitussive (in combination products w decongestants).
Hydrocortisone Management of adrenocortical insufficiency; chronic use in other situations is limited because of mineralocorticoid activity. Systemically/Locally in inflammatory, allergic, hematologic, autoimmune, neoplastic disorders, and septic shock.
Hydromorphone Moderate to severe pain (alone and in combination with nonopioid analgesics).Moderate to severe chronic pain in opioid-tolerant pts requiring daily, RTC, long-term opioid tx and alternative treatment options are inadequate.Antitussive (lower doses)
Hydroxyzine Treatment of anxiety. Preoperative sedation. Antiemetic. Antipruritic.
Infliximab Moderate to severe RA, Crohn's w inadequate response to therapy, active psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Moderate to severe active colitis w inadequate response to therapy, and chronic severe plaque psoriasis (candidate for systemic therapy)
Ibuprofen Mild to moderate pain, fever, dysmenorrhea, inflammatory disorders (RA, Osteoarthritis), and moderate to severe pain with use of opioid analgesics.
Lactulose Treatment of chronic constipation. Adjunct in the management of portal-systemic (hepatic) encephalopathy (PSE).
Levofloxacin Tx of infections; UTI, chronic bacterial prostatitis, nosocomial pneumonia, CApneomonia, bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, skin/skin structure infections, post-exposure tx to anthrax, and tx/prophylaxis plague.
Methylprednisolone Systemic/Local: inflammatory, allergic, hematologic, neoplastic, autoimmune, and immunosuppresant disorders. Alternate day dosing chronic illness. replacement in adrenal therapy. Hypercalcemia adjunct, mgmt acute spinal cord injury, chemo N/V adjunct
Montelukast Prevention and chronic treatment of asthma. Seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis (should only be used in patients with inadequate response or intolerance to other therapies). Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB).
Morphine Sulfate Severe pain (the 20 mg/mL oral solution concentration should only be used in opioid-tolerant patients). Pain severe to require daily, RTC long-term opioid treatment which alternative tx options inadequate (ER). Pulmonary edema.Pain associated with MI.
Naloxone Reversal of CNS depression and respiratory depression because of suspected opioid overdose. Unlabeled Use(s): Opioid-induced pruritus (low-dose IV infusion). Management of refractory circulatory shock.
Nevirapine Management of HIV infection in combination with a nucleoside analogue.
Rifampin Active tuberculosis (with other agents). Elimination of meningococcal carriers. Unlabeled Use(s): Prevention of disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B in close contacts. Synergy with other antimicrobial agents for S. aureus infections
Sertraline Major depressive disorder. Panic disorder. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Social anxiety disorder (social phobia). Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Timolol (eye drops) Hypertension (alone or with other agents). Prevention of MI. Prevention of migraine headaches. Unlabeled Use(s): Ventricular arrhythmias. Essential tremor. Anxiety.
Zidovudine HIV infection (in combination with other antiretrovirals). Reduction of maternal/fetal transmission of HIV. Unlabeled Use(s): Chemoprophylaxis after occupational exposure to HIV.
