Lecture 5 Objectives - Sialogram
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Purpose of Saliva? | Lubricates the Oral Cavity and mixes with food to form a bolus for easier swallowing |
| Enzyme that initiates digestion of Carbohydrates | Ptyalin |
| Largest Salivary Gland, located Inferior and anterior to the external ear, saliva drains via the Stenson's Duct? | Parotid Glands |
| Salivary Gland located on the floor of the mouth, medial to the Angle of Mandible; saliva drains via the Wharton's Duct? | Submandibular Glands |
| Salivary Gland located on the floor of the mouth in the Sublingual space lateral to the tongue; saliva drains via the Bartholin's Duct | Sublingual Glands |
| Buildup of crystallized saliva deposits - block the flow of saliva causing pain and swelling? | Salivary Stones or Sialoliths |
| Bacteria infection of the Salivary Gland | Sialadenitis |
| Mumps, flu, and others that can cause swelling of the Parotid Glands? | Viral infection |
| Occurs most commonly in the Parotid Glands - Pleomorphic Adenoids (benign mixed tumors) are most common, comprising 85% of all Salivary Gland Neoplasms | Benign Tumors |
| More than half of the tumors found in the Submandibular and Sublingual Glands; Core biopsy diagnosis of tumor | Malignant tumors |
| Radiographic and Fluoroscopic examination of the Salivary glands and ducts with the use of contrast media | Sialography |
| Clinical indications for performing a Sialogram: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. | 1. Locate Diverticula, stricture, and/or stones within the Salivary duct 2. Presence of a Salivary Duct Fistula 3. Inflammatory lesion or tumor within Salivary gland or associated duct 4. Benign gland obstruction 5. Diagnosis needed - CT & MR imaging |
| Contrast used? | Water-soluble Iodinated contrast media |
| Route contrast media is administered? | Injected into the duct in question through a small catheter after the duct has been localized |
| Articles necessary when performing a Sialogram (10): | Sialogram Tray → Dilator Probe → Goose Neck Lamp → Magnifying Headset → 6-10 CC Syringe → Emesis Basin → Paper tape → Tongue Depressor → Sterile Gloves → Lemons |
| How to prepare Sialogram Tray and Radiographic Equipment when performing a Sialogram? | Place Sialogram Tray on side table → Have additonal supplies available as needed (linens, emesis basin, kleenex) → 10x12 IRs available outside fluoro room for Overheads per Radiologist request |
