| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Wave | A disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space |
| Transverse Wave | A wave in which the particles move up and down. |
| Longitudinal Wave | A wave in which the particles move, back and forth to the direction the wave travels |
| Electromagnetic Wave | A wave that carries energy through matter or empty space |
| Electromagnetic Spectrum | The entire range of electromagnetic waves including radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays |
| Sound Wave | A mechanical wave transmitted by sound energy through a longitudinal motion of particles of matter in which the wave travels |
| Light Wave | An electromagnetic wave that if visible to the human eye and can travel through matter and empty space |
| Crest | The highest point of a transverse wave |
| Trough | The lowest point of a transverse wave |
| Rarefaction | The region of lower density or pressure in a longitudinal wave |
| Compression | The region of higher density or pressure in a longitudinal wave. |
| Frequency | The number of waves made in a given amount of time |
| Amplitude | The maximum distance of a wave from their rest position |
| Wave Length | The distance between any two corresponding points that are next to each other on a wave |
| Medium (Media) | Any type of matter (solid, liquid or gas) through which a wave travels |
