March Madness Vocab pt. 1

| degree | a certificate of completion of a course of student that receives after all classes have been taken and passed. |
| Associate's degree | a two-year degree from a junior college or community college. |
| Bachelor's degree | a four-year degree from a college or university, usually requires 120 credit hours. |
| major | a students focused area of study. ex: communications, education, history, chemistry, design, engineering, architecture |
| minor | a students secondary field of study. |
| Master's degree | a graduate degree that usually requires 2 or more years of study beyond a Bachelor's degree. |
| doctoral | the most advanced degree that can be given-gives people the title "Dr." |
| degree plan | a specific list of required classes and electives that must be completed for a degree. |
| credit hour | credit given for attending 1 lecture hour of class each week for about 15 weeks. each class is worth 3 credit hours. |
| full time student | a student enrolled in 12 or more credit hours per semester in undergraduate work. |
| part time student | a student that takes less than 12 hours during the semester for undergraduate work. |
| prerequisit | a course that must be completed before enrollment into another course. ex: must take Algebra 1 before Algebra 2 |
| GPA | the average of your class grades, calculated on a 4-point scale. A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0 |
| grade levels | freshman-1st year-30 hours or fewer sophomore-2nd year-30-59 hours junior-3rd year-60-89 hours senior-4th year-90 or more |
| public university | a college or university that receives funding from the state, lowering the cost that students must pay ex: UC, UK, Purdue, Miami |
| private university | a non-state university that doesn't receive funding from the state, so must raise money from private funding, tuition and fees. ex: Xavier, Harvard, Yale, Princeton |
| community college | a two-year college that gives 2 options to students: 1) transfer your courses to a 4-year university. 2) receive an Associate's degree in a certain field. |
| resident | in state-a student who meets state residency requirements. |
| non-resident | out of state-a student who does not meet state residency requirements. |
| campus life | social and academic activities on campus ex: leadership committee, multi-cultural counseling, religious, dining, clubs, athletics |
