Work and Machines
This is a review over chapter 13 in the Physical Science 6th edition textbook.
Question/Term | Answer/definition |
---|---|
Define Work | The energy transferred to an object when an external force act on the object to move it. |
What is the formula for work? | W=Fd |
Define Power | The rate of doing work |
What is the formula for Power? | P= W/t |
What do we measure work in? | Joules |
What do we measure power in? | Watts |
Define simple machines | basic mechanical devices that change the magnitude, direction, or distance traveled of the force used when doing work. |
What are the three most general types of simple machines? | Lever; wheel and axle; inclined plane |
Define mechanical advantage | the measure of the change in the input needed to do a certain amount of work when using a simple machine |
Define Ideal Mechanical advantage (IMA) | The measure of mechanical advantage for an ideal machine-- 100% efficient with no friction. It is the ratio of the input distance to the output distance. |
Define Actual mechanical advantage (AMA) | The meachanical advantage takinginto account all mechanical losses sustained throught the machine. It is the ratio of the output force to the input force. |
Define efficiency | the effectiveness of a machine or process at converting energy from one form to another. |
Define Lever | A simple machine that consists of a rigid bar that turns about a pivot point. |
Define fulcrum | The pivot point at which the lever turns. |
Define torque | Any force that tries to cause an object to rotate around its axis. |
Efficiency formula | (W out/W in)100% or (AMA/ IMA)100% |
Describe a second class lever | The fulcrum is located at the front of the lever. and the force in and out both acts in an upward motion. |
Describe a third class lever | The fulcrum is located at the front of the lever, and the force in and out both act in a downward motion. |
Describe a first class lever | The fulcrum is located in the middle of the lever, and the force out is acting upwards, and the force in is acting downwards. |
Define Wheel and axle | A simple machine consisting of a wheel with a rod running through its axis that acts as the pivot point. |
Define gear | A common variation on the wheel and axle that consists of a wheel with teeth around its perimeter that mesh will teeth on other gears to do work while producing rotational motion. |
What is the IMA formula for gears? | TEETH in/ TEETH out |
Define pulley | A simple machine that consists of a wheel- and- axle system with a groove around the perimeter of the wheel in which a rope, cable, or belt moves with the wheel as it rotates. |
What are the different types of pulleys? | Single pulley, movable pulley, and a block and tackle |
Define inclined plane | a simple machine consisting of a flat surface whose opposite ends are at different heights |
Define wedge | an inclined plane consisting of two planes connected with an acute angle that is thick at one end and thinner at the other. |
Define screw | An inclined plane that is wrapped around a cone or cylinder in a spiral pattern. |
Define compound machine | A machine consisting of a combination of two or more simple machines. |
