monologue A long uninterrupted speech (made by 1 character) that a character makes to the OTHER characters on stage.
personification Giving human qualities to inanimate objects.
simile Comparison between two things using “like” or “as”.

couplet Pairs of rhymed lines
soliloquy A character is ALONE on stage expressing his/her thoughts or feelings in a long uninterrupted speech.
foil Two characters’ personalities are completely opposite of one another to accentuate each other
understatement When you make something important seem LESS important.
comic relief A humorous (funny) scene, incident, or speech that relieves the overall emotional intensity.
motif Repeating images, element, or theme throughout the play.
double entendre A phrase that has 2 meanings, especially where one is innocent and literal, the other is risqué or bawdy; an innuendo.
malapropism When a character uses the wrong word in a sentence. Maybe she’ll endite him to dinner. (means to say invite).
iambic pentameter A line made up of five pairs of short/long or unstressed/stressed syllables (10 syllables in one line).
hyperbole Over exaggeration for emphasis; overstatement
allusion A reference to an outside piece of literature or mythology.
aside Words spoken in an undertone for the audience to hear, but not the other characters on stage.
oxymoron Paired words that are opposites. Cold fire; sick health; loving hate.
