Geology This is the study of earth
Buoyancy This is the tendency of an object to float or sink in a fluid
Lithosphere The uppermost mechanic later of the earth consisting of the crust and the upper part of the mantle
Asthenosphere The plastic portion of the mantle that can flow on long timescales
Nebular theory This states that the sun and all other objects in the solar system formed from a swirling cloud of gas and dust
Isostasy The lighter lithosphere floating on the denser underlying asthenosphere
Pangea A supercontinent that assembled at the end of the Paleozoic era
Sediment Loose rock or minerals that are not cemented together
Seafloor spreading Formation of new areas of oceanic crust which occurs at mid-ocean ridges
Magnetic field The region measurably affected by the force emanating from a magnet
Dynamo Theory A rotating, convecting and electrically conducting fluid can maintain a magnetic field
Magnetic inclination This is the angle between earth’s magnetic field and earth’s surface at a given location
Magnetic polarity This is the orientation of the poles in a magnetic dipole system
Curie Point Temperature at which substance becomes magnetic
Paleomagnetism The study of earth’s magnetic field as preserved in geologic materials
Magnetic declination The difference between geographic north and magnetic north in an area
