Geology101 Flashcard
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Geology | This is the study of earth |
| Buoyancy | This is the tendency of an object to float or sink in a fluid |
| Lithosphere | The uppermost mechanic later of the earth consisting of the crust and the upper part of the mantle |
| Asthenosphere | The plastic portion of the mantle that can flow on long timescales |
| Nebular theory | This states that the sun and all other objects in the solar system formed from a swirling cloud of gas and dust |
| Isostasy | The lighter lithosphere floating on the denser underlying asthenosphere |
| Pangea | A supercontinent that assembled at the end of the Paleozoic era |
| Sediment | Loose rock or minerals that are not cemented together |
| Seafloor spreading | Formation of new areas of oceanic crust which occurs at mid-ocean ridges |
| Magnetic field | The region measurably affected by the force emanating from a magnet |
| Dynamo Theory | A rotating, convecting and electrically conducting fluid can maintain a magnetic field |
| Magnetic inclination | This is the angle between earth’s magnetic field and earth’s surface at a given location |
| Magnetic polarity | This is the orientation of the poles in a magnetic dipole system |
| Curie Point | Temperature at which substance becomes magnetic |
| Paleomagnetism | The study of earth’s magnetic field as preserved in geologic materials |
| Magnetic declination | The difference between geographic north and magnetic north in an area |
