| Term | Definition |

| Independent Variable | Any variable that can be attributed a value without attributing a value to any other variable |
| Experiment | A procedure carried out to support or refute a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy or likelihood of something previously untried |
| Hypothesis | A proposed explanation for a phenomenon. |
| Inference | Steps in reasoning, moving from premises to logical Consequences; the word infer means to "carry forward". |
| Observation | The active acquisition of information from a primary source. In living beings, observation employs the senses. |
| Research | "creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge". |
| Scientific Investigation | A plan for asking questions and testing possible answers |
| Dependent Variable | Something that depends on other factors |
| Controlled Variable | Any variable that's held constant in a research study. |
| Control | To have power or authority over. |
| Data | Information such as facts and numbers used to analyze something or make decisions. |
| Conclusion | A statement based on experimental measurements and observations. |
| Analyze | To study (something) closely and carefully |
| Inference | The process of drawing conclusions based on evidence and reasoning. |
| Data Trends | A trend that describes the general direction of change of some variable. |
