States of Consciousness

TermDefinition
Sleep Stage 1 eye movements slow, hypnotic jerk can occur, brain is still awake
Sleep Stage 2 light sleep, muscles contracting and relaxing, heart rate slow, body temperature decreases, sleep spindles occur
Sleep Stage 3 deep sleep, hard to wake, no eye movement or muscle activity, groggy if woken, delta waves
REM Sleep when intense dreaming occurs, muscle paralysis, initially last about 10 minutes, but increases through out the night
Delta Waves Very slow brain waves, minimal brain activity
Sleep Spindles Rapid sleep waves, occur in bursts
Pineal Gland Melatonin Secretion
Insomnia inability to fall asleep; causes depression, anxiety, and stress
Narcolepsy Sudden lapse into REM sleep and loss of muscle tension
Sleep Apnea brief pauses in breathing during sleep followed by waking; may cause daytime fatigue
Night Terrors intense frightening dreams during stage 3 sleep, most prevalent in young boys
Lucid Dreams when the sleeper can direct the dream or is aware they are sleeping
Manifest Content what we recall from the storyline of our dreams
Freud's Wish Fulfillment belief that many dreams express unconscious desires
Information-Processing Theory states that dreams are caused by people reviewing problems they faced during the day
Cognitive Theory belief that dream content reflects dreamer's cognitive
Latent Content what the dream content actually represents
Psychoactive Drugs chemicals introduced into the body which alter perceptions, mood, and other elements of our conscious
Hypnosis an altered state on consciousness that occurs in the context of a special hypnotist/subject relationship
