Term | Definition |
---|---|
Charged Object | Matter with a surplus or deficiency of electrons |
Electric Field | Region where a charged object experiences an electric force radially outward from a positive charge and radially inward toward a negative charge |
Electric Force | Attractive or repulsive interaction between any two charged objects |
Force Field | Region in space affected by a force at a distance (i.e. an electric field, a gravitational field, or a magnetic field) |
Magnetic Field | The area around a magnet or a moving electrical charge that can exert a magnetic force. |
Magnitude | The size or quantity of something |
Static Electricity | The electrical charge on the surface of an object |
Uniform Electric Field | An electric field that has the same magnitude and direction throughout the system. |
Circuit | A closed loop of conductors through which a electric current can flow |
Conductivity | A physical property that describes the ability of a substance to transfer heat or electrical energy |
Conductor | A substance that allows the flow of electrical charge or transfers thermal energy through matter. |
Current | A directional flow of electrical charge through an object or medium. |
Insulator | A material that does not conduct heat or electric current |
Metalloids | Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals; sometimes referred to as semiconductors |
Metals | Elements that are typically solid, shiny, malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity; includes most elements. |
Nonmetal | Elements that are typically not shiny not malleable, and poor conductors of heat and electricity; usually gases or brittle solids |
Semiconductor | A substance whose electric conductivity falls between that of a conductor and an insulator; the foundation of modern electronics. |
Electric Circuit | The pathway through which electric current flows |
Attractive | Having the tendency to pull other objects toward itself |
Charged Particle | A particle with either a positive or negative electrical charge |
Interacting Objects | Objects that affect one another |
Magnetism | A force that attracts or repels objects toward or away from each other; caused by electrons in a substance. |
Repulsive | Having a tendency to push other objects away from itself |
Electromagnet | A temporary magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by electric current |
Electromagnetic Induction | The production of electric potential difference across a conductor as the conductor moves through a magnetic field |
Generator | A device that changes mechanical energy into usable electrical energy |
Motor | A device that uses different energy sources to produce force and motion. |
Transformer | A device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through electromagnetic induction |
