What is the function of ligaments? To connect bones and reinforce joints, allowing required movements while restricting motions in other dirctions
Areas of the body where cartilage is located Nose, parts of the ribs and joints
What is an analgesic? A medication used to relieve pain
What is an antipyretic? A medication used to treat a fever
What is a prostaglandin? A substance that causes the symptoms of inflammation, which include pain, swelling, and redness
What is remodeling? The process by which the body recycles old bone and builds new bone
What causes the inflammatory reaction associated with gout? A buildup of uric acid in the joints and tendons
What causes osteoporosis in postmenopausal patients? A decrease in estrogen production that leads to a decrease in bone mineral density.
How do bisphosphonates work to treat osteoporosis? By inhibiting the breakdown of bone by osteoclasts
Why is vitamin D given along with calcium to treat osteoporosis? To allow more calcium to be absorbed so that the body can build new bone
