Atomic Model
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is an atom? | The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element. |
| How has our understanding of the atom changed over time? | We used to believe atoms are solid spheres (like a ball) but now we know there are smaller particles that make up atoms. |
| What is the nucleus of an atom? | The dense center of an atom made up of protons and neutrons. |
| What do we call the energy levels in the electron cloud of an atom? | Shells |
| Where is most of the mass of an atom found? | In the nucleus |
| Define proton | A subatomic particle found in the nucleus of atoms that has a positive electric charge. |
| Define neutron | A subatomic particle found in the nucleus of atoms with no electric charge. |
| Define electron | The smallest subatomic particle, found in the area surrounding the nucleus known as the electron cloud |
| What are protons, electrons and neutrons? | Subatomic particles |
| Describe the electron cloud model of an atom. | The current model used today. A dense central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of electrons. |
| Why is the proton important? | The number of protons determine what type of element an atom is. |
