| Slums | Poor, overcrowded urban areas |
| Suburb | Residential area on the edge of a city or town |
| Why do people move to cities and suburbs? | To find jobs |
| Examples of push factors | Poverty, lack of jobs, discrimination, conflict |
| Example of pull factors | Good jobs, freedom, safety |
| Example of migration by choice | Irish people fleeing a shortage of food |
| Example of involuntary migration | The slave trade |
| Challenges of urbanization | Cannot provide housing, jobs, schools, hospitals, and other services; the spread of slums |
| Problems with suburban sprawl | Can increase pollution and energy use |
| Voluntary Migration | Migration that is by choice |
