Chapter 10 Social Psychology

• Prejudice Negative emotional attitude held toward members of a specific social group
• Racism Prejudice based on categorizing humans into different races
• Sexism Prejudice against men OR women, based solely on gender
• Ageism Prejudice based on age
• Heterosexism Prejudice against homosexual individuals
• Discrimination Unequal treatment of people who should have the same rights as others
• Scapegoating Blaming a person or group for the actions of others or for conditions not of their making
• Displaced aggression Redirecting aggression to a target other than the actual source of one’s frustration
• Social stereotypes Oversimplified images of people who belong to a particular social group
• Self-stereotyping Tendency of individuals to worry about the applicability of stereotypes applied to them or at least worrying about how they appear in the presence of stereotypers
• Stereotype threat Anxiety that rises when people feel judged; can lower performance, seemingly confirming stereotype
• Individuating information Helps us see a person as an individual and not as a member of a group or as a social category
• Optimal distinctiveness theory Tension between the need to be similar to group members and distinctive from them
• Self-serving bias the tendency to take credit for success but deny blame for failure
