Chapter 5 Sensation and Reality

| Psychophysics | quantitatively investigates the relationship between physical stimuli and the sensations and perceptions they produce. |
| Absolute thresholds | minimum amount of energy that can be detected 50% of the time. |
| • Sensation | Information arriving from sense organs (eyes, ears, etc.) |
| • Perception | Mental process of organizing sensations into meaningful patterns |
| • Visible spectrum | Narrow spread of the electromagnetic spectrum to which the eyes respond |
| • Lens | Structure in the eye that focuses light rays |
| • Retina | Light-sensitive layer of cells in the back of the eye (photoreceptors) • Easily damaged from excessive exposure to light (e.g. staring at an eclipse) |
| • Cornea | Transparent membrane covering the front of the eye; bends light rays inward |
| • Hyperopia |
