Chapter 5 Sensation and Reality

TermDefinition
Psychophysics quantitatively investigates the relationship between physical stimuli and the sensations and perceptions they produce.
Absolute thresholds minimum amount of energy that can be detected 50% of the time.
• Sensation Information arriving from sense organs (eyes, ears, etc.)
• Perception Mental process of organizing sensations into meaningful patterns
• Visible spectrum Narrow spread of the electromagnetic spectrum to which the eyes respond
• Lens Structure in the eye that focuses light rays
• Retina Light-sensitive layer of cells in the back of the eye (photoreceptors) • Easily damaged from excessive exposure to light (e.g. staring at an eclipse)
• Cornea Transparent membrane covering the front of the eye; bends light rays inward
• Hyperopia
