Figurative Language

TermDefinition
Idiom a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g., rain cats and dogs, see the light ).
Imagery a type of figurative language that appeals to the senses. The descriptions can be about living things or inanimate objects.
Simile compares two things using the words “like” and “as.”
Metaphor compares two things without using the words "like" or "as"
Alliteration a repetition of the first consonant sounds in several words.
Personification gives human characteristics to inanimate objects
Onomatopoeia the use of words that sound like their meaning
Hyperbole an outrageous exaggeration that emphasizes a point
Allusion a figure of speech that makes a reference to a place
Theme a story
Irony when the opposite of what one thinks will happen happens
Figurative language creates pictures in head
Verbal Irony the use of words to express something other than or opposite of the literal or real meaning
Dramatic Irony a situation in which the audience is aware of something that the character does not know
Tone the author's attitude toward the material
Foreshadowing when a character hints about something that will happen later
Mood the atmosphere the reader feels while reading a text.
Symbolism The actions of a character
