QuestionAnswer
volcano A weak spot where molten or material comes to the surface.
magma A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gasses, and water from the mantle.
lava When magma reaches the surface it is called.
Ring of Fire Many volcanoes that rim the pacific ocean.
island arc Volcanoes that created a string of islands.
hotspot An area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crude like a blow torch.
magma chamber Beneath a volcano magma collects in a chamber.
pipe A long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to earth's surface.
vent Molten rock and glasses leave the volcano.
lava flow Is the area covered by lava as it pours out of the vent.
crater A bowl shaped form at the top of a volcano.
silica Formed by the elements of oxygen and silicon.
pahoehoe Fast moving hot lava.
aa Lava that is cooler and slower moving.
pyroclastic flow Explosive eruption hurls out ash, cinders, and bombs as well as gasses.
dormant volcano It is like a sleeping bear.
extinct volcano Unlikely to erupt again.
hot spring Groundwater heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and forms a natural pool
geyser A fountain of water and a steam that erupts from the ground.
geothermal Water heated by water can provide a clean, reliable energy source.
shield volcano A wide gently sloping mountain.
cinder cone volcano A steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain.
composite volcano A tall cone-shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash.
active volcano A volcano that is currently erupting
