Chapter 6

Intro to Integrated Mosquito Management

QuestionAnswer
What are the various strategies and methods of mosquito control? Physical control or course reduction, prevention/mechanical barriers, biological control, and chemical control.
List the key components of Integrated Mosquito Management? Understand the biology and habitat of the pests and alter the conditions that favor the pest at their different life stages. Target the underlying reasons why a pest problem exists and focus on managing pests to prevent harm.
Explain how to develop an effective control program. a. Identify the pest and review its biology. b. Determine the extent of the pest's presence. c. Select the best control strategies for pest infestation. d. Implement control strategies. e. Evaluate the effectiveness of the control measures.
Describe source reduction methods for mosquito larvae control. Removal of water sources - emptying artificial containers, screening water such as rain barrels, unclogging gutters, disposing of old tires, or adding a bubbler to a bird bath to prevent water from becoming stagnant.
What is Integrated Mosquito Management? A type of IPM focused on managing mosquito pest problems.
What is Integrated Pest Management? A pest management decision-making strategy that utilizes a wide range of methods or tactics with a goal of managing pests to prevent them from reaching economically or aesthetically damaging levels with the least risk to the environment.
What are control measures based on? Good working knowledge, understanding of pertinent technology, and safety precautions.
What makes for the best IMM program? They target the underlying reasons why a pest problem exists and focuses on managing pests to prevent harm.
What is the backbone of IMM and why? Surveillance - it provides information IDing the largest source of mosquitoes and allows control efforts to be focused; helps determine the initial extent of the pest problem and the species.
Why is it important to identify the pest and review its biology? To know that the organism is the one causing the issue and that it needs to be controlled.
What are the steps in determining the extent of the pest's presence? Surveillance, establishing an action threshold, and identifying goals.
What's a form of source reduction? Removal of artificial water sources.
What are some examples of prevention or mechanical barriers? Structural barriers such as window or door screens; covering any openings to prevent the entry of mosquitoes.
What's an example of biological control? BTI for larval control.
How do you evaluate the effectiveness of control measures? Conduct inspections or get feedback from customers.
