Larval Mosquito Habitat
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are some areas that do not support mosquitoes? | Moving water (rivers, streams, creeks), most lakes due to the natural predators present, highly polluted water, areas with water turbulence. |
What are the types and characteristics of habitats that support larval mosquitoes? | Stagnant water along the margins of rivers, streams and lakes; almost every site that collects and holds water for a week or more after a rainfall. Marsh edges, short grass ditches, woodland pools, tire ruts, and hoof prints. |
What are some adverse conditions mosquitoes tend to avoid? | Intense heat, drying winds. |
What are the types and characteristics of habitats that support adult mosquitoes? | Shaded areas with cooler daytime temperatures and high relative humidity including forests or tree stands with dense lower underbrush and taller foliage; culverts, hollow logs, un-mowed lawns, the underside of decks, and the shaded sides of buildings. |
What is the importance of harborage areas? | To provide prime resting areas to protect mosquitoes from intense heat and drying winds. These areas tend to have a high concentration of adult mosquitoes during the day, making them good places to apply chemical control. |
What is the importance of larval development sites? | Locations where mosquitoes are confined and concentrated where they can be easily controlled |
What is the difference between natural and man-made mosquito breeding sites? | Natural breeding sites often alternate between wet and dry conditions. Man-made sites are ideal for mosquitoes that lay their eggs on the surface of the water. |
In which habitats do Aedes triseriatus breed? | On the ground or above water level in objects that can hold water such as temporary and snow melt pools, irrigation & flood water, tree holes, and artificial containers. |
In which habitats do Coquillettidia perturbans breed? | Pools with vegetation and freshwater marshes. |
What are some ways to reduce breeding sites for mosquitoes that cause La Cross encephalitis? | Since they develop in tree holes and containers, fill tree holes with expanding foam or install a rain deflector above the hole and empty containers regularly. |
What is a catch basin? | Otherwise known as a storm drain, they are designed tod rain excess water from impervious surfaces, such as streets and parking lots, and often hold standing water. |
What is a development site? | An area where mosquitoes lay eggs that develop into adults. |
What is a harborage area? | The location where a pest seeks shelter. |
What is oviposition? | The act of laying eggs. |
What is a structure in regards to mosquito control? | Any man-made site that holds water long enough to breed mosquitoes. |
