The First Law

Newton's first law

QuestionAnswer
What is the nick-name for the First Law? The Law of Inertia
What will happen to an object at rest according to the First Law? It will remain at rest until acted on by an outside force.
What is Inertia? The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.
What will happen to an object with a constant velocity according to the First Law? It will remain in at a constant velocity until acted on by an outside force.
Why is the first law known as the law of inertia? Because the object is resisting force unless a force acts upon it.
Why do you slide to one side when you turn a corner while riding in a car? Because you and the car are moving forward and you are turning, but you will remain in motion because you have inertia.
What is one example of an outside force? Friction.
What does inertia depend on? Mass.
Why does mass affect friction? Because the more mass an object has, the greater the inertia and the greater the force needed to move the object.
What are the different types of friction? Rolling Friction, Static Friction, Fluid Friction, and Sliding Friction.
