Most common allergies are due to ALLERGENS such as pollens, animal dander, house dust and dust mites, molds, certain drugs, insect stings, and many foods. other substances are dyes, perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, detergents, tobacco, feathers, fabrics, etc
know about latex allergy incidence of latex allergy has increased with expanded use of gloves in hospital. ask pt. about allergic reaction. if allergic, it should be noted in red on patients chart.
An allergic reaction may manifest itself as: Hay Fever, asthma, eczema, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, urticaria or hives, food allergy occupational allergy, and anaphylaxis
What is hay fever an allergic reaction to trees, grass,and weed pollens. It is Americas number 1 chronic illness. It may be seasonal or pernnial or both.
Hay Fever is aka: Allergic Rhinitis.

The patient is always given written instructions to follow before allergy testing. These instructions state that: the patient is to stop all antihistamine drugs 7 days prior to testing. Steroids should be discontinued at least 30 days prior to tests.
When testing patients for hypersensitivity to certain substances, such as allergens, be sure that you have ___ and ___ available for emergency use epinephrine and an antihistamine such as benedryl (wrote in: diphenhydramine=benedryl)
The three basic types of skin tests are: 1.scratch (epicutaneous) or prick 2.patch 3.intradermal

What type of system should be used when giving allergenic extracts Use site-rotation system for each extract
How should allergic extracts be stored? Allergic extracts should be refrigerated
Allergic extracts, stored in the refrigerator should retain their potency for 10-12 weeks
*a note* severe reactions can occur therefore emergency equipment and supplies must be available for use
The patient should be observed for __ to __ minutes following the injection of an allergic extract 15 to 30
What should you NOT do if you come into contact with stinging insects? do not beat the air with your hands or slap the insect. This may trigger an attack. Do not run!
What is the best attire to be wearing when near a stinging insect? wear close fitting clothes that wont trap an insect in the folds. Long sleeves and pants are even better protection
When should you should be especially careful of stinging insects? after a rainstorm. Pollen is scarce then and insects are easily provoked
What attracts stinging insects looking like a flower. light bright colored clothing and sweet smelling perfume, lotion. etc
