isostasy the equilibrium between continental crust and the denser mantle below it.
subsidence the weight of the ice pushed the crust downward into the mantle.
uplift the upward vertical motion of earths surface.
compression squeezing stress.
tension stress that pulls something apart.
shear parallel forces acting in opposite directions
ocean trenches a deep trench forms where two places meet
volcanic arc a curved line of volcanoes that form parallel to a plate boundary
transform faults tectonic plates that slide horizonzally pass each other.
fault zone an area of many fractured pieces of crust along a large fault.
folded mountains made of layers of rocks that are folded
fault block mountains parallel ridges that form where blocks of crust move up or down along faults.
uplifted mountains when large regions rise vertically with very little deformation.
plain an extensive area of level or rolling land.
basins areas of substance and regions with low elevation
plateaus flat regions with high elevations
