isostasy | the equilibrium between continental crust and the denser mantle below it. |
subsidence | the weight of the ice pushed the crust downward into the mantle. |
uplift | the upward vertical motion of earths surface. |
compression | squeezing stress. |
tension | stress that pulls something apart. |
shear | parallel forces acting in opposite directions |
ocean trenches | a deep trench forms where two places meet |
volcanic arc | a curved line of volcanoes that form parallel to a plate boundary |
transform faults | tectonic plates that slide horizonzally pass each other. |
fault zone | an area of many fractured pieces of crust along a large fault. |
folded mountains | made of layers of rocks that are folded |
fault block mountains | parallel ridges that form where blocks of crust move up or down along faults. |
uplifted mountains | when large regions rise vertically with very little deformation. |
plain | an extensive area of level or rolling land. |
basins | areas of substance and regions with low elevation |
plateaus | flat regions with high elevations |
