AP Psych Unit 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cornea | The eye's clear, protective outer layer, covering the pupil and iris |
| Pupil | Adjustable opening in the center of the eye through which light passes |
| Iris | A ring of muscle tissue that forms the colored portion of the eye. Controls the size of the pupil opening |
| Lens | Transparent structure behind the pupil that changes shape to help focus images on the retina |
| Retina | Light-sensitive inner surface of the eye containing rods and cones (and neurons); begins processing visual information |
| Fovea | Central focus point in the retina, around which the eye's cones cluster |
| Optic Nerve | Nerve that carries neural impulses from the eye to the brain |
| Cats Pee Literally Right Outside | Cornea, pupil, lens, retina, optic nerve |
| Auditory canal | The channel located in the outer ear that funnels sound waves from the pinna to the tympanic membrane (eardrum) |
| Eardrum | Also known as the tympanic membrane, is a thin layer of tissue that vibrates in response to sound waves |
| Ossicles | 3 bones of the middle ear (incus, malleus, stapes), transfer the sound wave vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the oval window of the cochlea |
| Oval window | Membrane-covered opening of the cochlea. It vibrates when it receives the sound waves and causes the fluid inside the cochlea t move |
| Cochlea | Coiled, bony, fluid-filled tube in the inner ear |
| Auditory nerve | Location where sound waves are transduced to neural impulses via cilia (hair cells) |
| Every Other Orangutan Catches Apples | Eardrum, ossicles, oval window, cochlea, auditory nerve |
