Classification of Matter (COM)

Substance is a type of matter with a fixed composition
Elements is a substance made up of atoms that are all alike
Compound is a substance in which the atom of two or more elements are chemically combined
Heterogeneous mixture in which different materials remain distinct
Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture made up of a liquid and solid
Colloid Heterogeneous mixture with particles that never settle
Tyndall Effect the scattering of a light beam as it passes through a colloid
Homogeneous Mixture Mixture that remains constantly and uniformly mixed
Solution is the same as homogeneous mixture
What are some different types of Elements? Calcium, oxygen, copper, hydrogen
What are some different types of Compounds? Water, chalk,salt,sugar
Examples of Heterogeneous Mixture? Oil and water, Honey and water, Chocolate chip cookies
Examples of Homogeneous Mixture? Eye contact solution, salt water, sugar water
Examples of Colloids? Ink and Water, Mayo, Jello,Milk
Examples of Suspensions? Leaves and Water, Sand and water, Dirt and water
What is the biggest particle? Suspensions
