Earth in Space and Why Are There Seasons?

| Rotation | A complete turn (spin) |
| What causes change in day and night? | Earth’s rotation to the east; one side of Earth faces the sun and the other faces away |
| What is a time zone? | Areas sharing the same time |
| Why are there standard time zones? | If each town had its own time, it would be hard to keep track of |
| Orbit | The path one object makes as it revolves around another |
| Revolution | The movement of one object around another or a complete journey around the sun |
| Axis | Imaginary line between the North and South poles that passes through Earth |
| Equinox | Period during which hours of daylight and hours of darkness are of equal length everywhere on Earth |
| Solstice | Period during which hours of daylight are longest in one hemisphere and shortest in the other hemisphere |
| What causes change in seasons? | The tilt of Earth’s axis as it revolves around the sun. |
| What causes summer? | When a hemisphere is tilted toward the sun. There is direct sunlight. |
| What causes winter? | When a hemisphere is tilted away from the sun. There is indirect sunlight. |
