Force & Motion Vocab
Newtons Laws of Motion
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Inertia | the tendency of a body to maintain its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an outside force. |
Force | A push or pull on an object |
Mass | The amount of matter in an object |
Acceleration | The rate at which an object changes velocity |
Newton's First Law | An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless or until acted on by an outside, unbalanced force. |
Newton's Second Law | The acceleration of an object is dependent upon the mass of the object and the force exerted on it. |
Newton's Third Law | For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction |
Deceleration | A decrease in the speed of an object (slowing down) |
Exert | To apply a force |
Unit of measurement for Force | Newtons (N) |
Unit of measurement for Mass | kilograms (kg) or grams (g) |
Unit of measurement for Speed | meters per second (m/s) |
Unit of measurement for Velocity | meters per second (m/s) |
Unit of measurement for Acceleration | meters per second per second (m/s^2) |
Formula for Force | F=MxA |
Formula for Mass | M=F/A |
Formula for Acceleration | A=F/M |
Formula for Distance | D=SxT |
Formula for Speed | S=D/T |
Formula for Velocity | V=D/T |
Formula for Time | T=D/S |
