Science Quiz Unit 2

QuestionAnswer
what is a "period" on a periodic table? a row- elements have the same energy levels
what is the periodic table? a chart that organizes the elements by their properties.
what is an element? matter to have only one kind of atom.
3 things in niels bohr modern atomic theory -electrons are arranged by energy level. -lower energy levels closest to nucleus. higher E-farther -electrons move in spherical cloud around nucleus (varying density)
two ways to show atom info? - atomic mass -element symbol
what is and ion? atoms of the same element and different number of electrons.
what mass is listed on the periodic table? average of all the atom's masses (isotopes) -listed as a decimal -unit= atomic mass unit
what is an isotope? atoms of the same element with dif number of neutrons.
relationship between protons and electrons they r equal
what is the atomic mass of an element? number of protons + number of neutrons.
what is the atomic number of an element? the number of protons -every element has a specific number of protons
what is a group on the periodic table a column- elements have similar properties and form similar bonds.
parts and charges of an atom? proton- positive- in nucleus neutron- neutral charge - in nucleus electron- negative charge- around nucleus.
2 things rutherford discovered? -the atoms are mostly empty space (electron cloud) -nucleus- positively charged center.
who discovered electrons? Thompson
what is matter? anything that has mass and takes up space (ex. water)
who determined atoms were to small to be seen for the human eye? Dalton
who developed the law of conservation of matter? (that matter can be created or destroyed) Lavoisier
who introduced the idea of atoms and how they make up matter? Democritus
What is an atom? the smalllest particle that takes up most types of matter.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
