Continent A large body of land
Ocean A large body of salt water
Hemisphere Half a sphere
Equator An imaginary line encircling Earth, halfway between the North and South Pole
Latitude An imaginary line that measures the distance North or South of the Equator
Parallel A line of latitude
Longitude An imaginary line that measures the distance East or West of the Prime Meridian
Meridian A line of longitude
Prime Meridian A line of longitude labeled zero degrees longitude
Cardinal Directions North, South, East, West
Intermediate Directions Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
Compass Rose A drawing that indicates directions on a map
Scale A guide that explains the relationships between real distances on Earth and a map
Symbol Something that stands for something else
Map Key Tells what each symbol stand for
Locator A small map inset in the corner of a larger map
Political Map A map that shows the boundaries of states and countries
Physical Map A map that highlights Earth's natural features
Relief Map A physical map that uses shading to show the difference in height between areas of land
Elevation Map A map that shows height of an area above sea level
Road Map A map that indicates cities, highways, and points of interest -- shows how to get from one place to another
Historical Map A map that shows information about the past or where events took place
