States of Consciousness
| Term | Definition |

| Consciousness | our awareness of various cognitive processes (sleeping, dreaming, concentrating, decision-making) |
| Waking consciousness | encompasses thoughts, feelings, perceptions when awake and reasonably alert |
| Daydreaming | effortless, spontaneous shifts in attention away from the here and now |
| Positive daydreams | playful, pleasant, entertaining; uncomplicated by worry daydreams |
| Negative daydreams | themes of frustration, guilt, fear of failure, and hostility in daydreams (mostly experienced by achievement-oriented people) |
| Scattered daydreams | fleeting, loosely connected, worrisome, little pleasure in daydreams (experienced with high anxiety) |
| Purposeful daydreams | daydreams that solve problems, think ahead, and develop insights |
| Cognitive purpose for daydreams | build problem solving and interpersonal skills, encourage creativity, endure difficult situations |
| Freud purpose for daydreams | work through hostile feelings or satisfy guilty desires |
