Neurotransmitters

TermDefinition
Acetylcholine (Ach) - Messenger at every junction of motor neurons. Involved in all movement. - Learning and memory. (Green Light) - Low levels are linked to Alzheimer's
Dopamine - Movement, learning, attention and emotion (Red Light) - Lack is associated with Parkinsons, excess is schizophrenia - Pleasure and Reward - Goes either to the nucleus accumbens or the basal ganglia
Serotonin - Mood, hunger, sleep, and arousal (Yellow Light) - Decrease is linked to depression
Norepinephrine - Alterness and Arousal (mental and physical) - Same as the hormone noradrenaline - Low levels is linked to ADHD
GABA - Major inhibitory neurotransmitter - Located in the CNS - Hyper-polarizes the postsynaptic membranes, reduces the likelihood of action potential. - Regulates anxiety - Abnormal levels is related to epileptic seziures
Glutamate - Major excitatory neurotransmitter - Most neuron used neurotransmitter - Synapses are found in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus - Learning
Epinephrine - The same chemical as adrenaline (a hormone) - Anxiety, fear, sexual arousal - Increases ANS activity
Endorphins - Elevates mood, reduces pain - Pain relieving effect causes humans to preform better when in pain
